The Economist explains: Thomas Piketty’s “Capital”, summarised in four paragraphs | The Economist.

Wealth (and inequality) is by many measures going back to the pre-WWI state that inspired Karl Marx’s „Das Kapital”. Piketty explores a wealth of data to conclude that wealth grows usually faster than GDP, and when GDP growth slows (like nowadays) we return to the „patrimonial capitalism” that worried Marx. So, he recommends governments to step in and adopt a global tax on wealth to prevent soaring inequality from contributing to economic/political instability down the road.
